What the hell does Leitkultur mean?

"The German language term Leitkultur is a politically controversial concept, first introduced in 1998 by the German-Arab sociologist Bassam Tibi. It can be translated as 'guiding culture' or 'leading culture', less literally as 'core culture' or 'basic culture'. Tibi himself saw it as a form of multiculturalism, but from 2000, the term figured prominently in the national political debate in Germany about national identity and immigration. The term then became associated with a monocultural vision of German society, with ideas of western cultural superiority, and with policies of compulsory cultural assimilation."
It is not very clear what German Leitkultur is or stands for. Drinking a lot of beer could be an element, or eating much Bratwurst. In my point of view culture is a living thing, organic. It changes itself all the time, wanders along and is under constant influence by other cultures. In Western countries cultures are so fully mixed and influenced by multinational corporations, that it makes no sense at all to speak about a dominant national culture. Just have a look at an average shopping mile in an average European city. They all look somewhat the same and you certainly can buy the same crap everywhere.
I have never understood why certain politicians (often Christians) want to freeze the culture and take one temporary moment of this culture as a blue print for what the culture of a country or society is or should be.
This is a very big mistake and in my point of view a very dangerous one. Many politicians used the term Leitkultur, this does not improve my general impression of them (under statement).

Wer nur darlegen will, dass Einwanderer in Deutschland deutsch lernen und der Werteordnung des Grundgesetzes zustimmen müssen – der braucht für solche Selbstverständlichkeiten das Wort Leitkultur nicht." Der bayerische Innenminister Günther Beckstein (CSU) forderte erneut, Ausländer müssten die deutsche Leitkultur anerkennen. „Unsere westliche Zivilisation, geprägt durch Christentum, Aufklärung und den Humanismus, die muss jeder anerkennen, sonst hat er bei uns nichts zu suchen“, sagte Beckstein im Deutschlandradio. Edmund Stoiber, CSU, hat sich gegen eine multikulturelle Gesellschaft in Deutschland ausgesprochen. Der Begriff der deutschen Leitkultur sei der Gegenentwurf zum Nebeneinander verschiedener Kulturen. Einheitsbrei statt Vielfalt ist geboten. Süddeutsche Zeitung, 10.2.2001, S.5

We make Leitkultur in our workplace anyway,but possibly that is not exactly the one these people are longing for...still, someone has got to do it!
